App-Based Parking Accelerates Council Savings

Australia is set to process approximately 45 million parking transactions via mobile apps this year, with the EasyPark app being one of the most popular used. This shift highlights a significant transformation in parking management, offering substantial savings for councils and a positive impact on the environment.

By transitioning to app-based parking solutions, its thought Australian councils have saved an estimated $4.5 million annually compared to the costs associated with traditional parking meters. EasyPark’s Executive General Manager, Craig Logan, points out that the adoption of digital parking is yielding both capital and operational expenditure savings for local governments.

“The traditional approach involved purchasing numerous parking meters, installing them, and requiring drivers to buy paper tickets. This not only meant a high upfront investment but also ongoing maintenance costs and per-transaction fees,” Logan explains. “Even with ticketless meters, councils still face per-transaction costs.”

With app-based parking, councils are eliminating these costs. The $4.5 million in savings from no cost to council transaction fees means these funds can be redirected to other community projects, such as enhancing libraries, parks, and schools. Additionally, fewer maintenance crews and vehicles are needed for parking meter upkeep, reducing operational costs and vehicle emissions.

The environmental benefits of app-based parking are equally significant. Councils are reducing their carbon footprint by decreasing demand for paper tickets which often also end up in landfill or as litter.

Drivers also benefit from app-based parking. With mobile apps, users pay only for the exact time they park, unlike traditional meters where payment is made upfront. This feature not only saves drivers money but also offers greater convenience and flexibility.

As the public becomes more familiar with mobile payments, it is crucial for councils to partner with user-friendly app providers. EasyPark has been downloaded by more than 4 Million people in Australia. Feedback from both end user drivers and Council and Parking Operator customers is that app based parking offers seamless integration and only users are only charged for the time parked – a more enhances experience and a step toward creating more livable cities.

Australia’s move to app-based parking is delivering significant financial and environmental benefits, making it a win-win solution for local governments and the community alike.

“If an option is provided to council at zero cost and users only pay for the time they are parked, then that creates a positive experience for both Council and the driver,” said Mr Logan.
