Sewerage works to begin in Port Hedland

The Western Australian town of Port Hedland will be connected to the Water Corporation’s waste water scheme.

With works expected to be completed by March 2013, waste water services will be delivered to the area as part of the state government’s Infill Sewerage Program.

Construction will begin in November after a $7.9 million contract was given to Rob Carr Pty Ltd, an Australian company specialising in underground pipe installations originally formed in Victoria that has since relocated to Perth.

Water Minister Bill Marmion said 250 residential blocks bound by Anderson, Sutherland, Morgan Wilson and McGregor streets will benefit from the connection.

“Much of this area has been rezoned to a higher density as part of the Port Hedland Land Use Master Plan,” Mr Marmion said.

He said infill sewerage is a priority due to the “significant” increase of people living in these areas.

“Residents in the infill area will receive notification of the start of works during November,” he said.

According to Mr Marmion, people living in the areas will also receive information packs before any roadway detours or excavation is begun near their properties.

Mr Marmion said all areas excavated would be restored as near as possible to their original condition after the completion of works.

The Water Corporation will administer the Port Hedland infill sewerage program from funding of $100 million from the state government program.

Further projects to take place in WA under the program will be for Bunbury, Bridgetown, Busselton, Dawesville, Mount Barker, South Geraldton, Greenough, Esperance, Rockingham and Kwinana.
