Queenslanders support councils in delivering community solutions, a survey reveals.
Conducted ahead of the Local Government Association of Queensland’s annual conference in Brisbane this week, the poll found respondents listing local infrastructure and energy transformation as among the issues of most concern.
“Councils are on the frontline of these challenges and they have solutions,” LGAQ chief executive Alision Smith said. “It shows, increasingly, Queensland voters care about localised solutions to complex problems.”
Among the top issues identified by the 20,000 people surveyed:
- local infrastructure
- reducing the cost of living
- energy and community transformation
- building safe and resilient communities
- protecting the environment
- addressing the housing crisis.
The results also come days out from the state election on 26 October.
“The number of Queenslanders searching for community-driven solutions to issues they care most about has increased by 40% since the 2020 state election,” Smith said. “Queenslanders have overwhelmingly backed councils’ calls for the leaders of the major and minor political parties to align their state election commitments to the priorities of communities.”
She added: “Empowering and resourcing councils to deliver more will achieve real outcomes.”
