In a statement issued on social media on Friday Mr Perrottet said he plans to formally announce on August 11 resignation after 13 years of public service.

He said it had been the greatest privilege of his life to serve as Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations, and finance minister.

“I got into politics to promote ideas and new ways of thinking and I am proud to have been part of a government that left NSW a much better place than we found it,” he said in a statement.

He told the AFR over the weekend that he was looking forward to contributing to BHP.

“Resources are hugely important to Australia and NSW, and BHP is a great Australian and NSW success story,” he told AFR Weekend.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to BHP’s global standing and business.”

Mr Perrottet will be joining the company in a Washington DC-based global role as the US head of corporate and external relations, the AFR reported.
