New industrial relations chief for Queensland

Peter O’Neill has been appointed Queensland’s new industrial relations commissioner.

Grace Grace – Queensland’s industrial relations minister – announced O’Neill’s appointment last week. O’Neill brings to the role of Industrial Commissioner to the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission decades of experience as a barrister.

Practicing since 1994, O’Neill – a specialist in workers’ compensation law – has appeared in state courts at all levels, including at the commission and Queensland’s Industrial Court.

O’Neill also has experience in sporting judiciary roles including as judiciary chair of Baseball Queensland and state judiciary panel member for Queensland Rugby League.

“Commissioners of the QIRC must demonstrate a strong set of skills, professional experience and expertise in industrial relations – Peter exemplifies these qualities,” Grace said. “His extensive involvement in the justice system and high standing in the community position him well for this new role with the QIRC.”

She added: “I congratulate Peter on his appointment and wish him the best in his new role.”
