Rachel McCallum has been appointed NSW electoral commissioner.
McCallum brings to the role an extensive background in public administration and law. Having held senior positions at the NSW Electoral Commission – including acting electoral commissioner – McCallum has significant experience in electoral matters.
Previous roles also include the NSW information commissioner and chief executive officer of the Information and Privacy Commission NSW.
McCallum’s 30-year career spans not only NSW government roles but also the Commonwealth public sector and regulatory bodies. Responsibilities have included overseeing key reforms in electoral funding laws and leading initiatives to enhance election integrity and cybersecurity.
Congratulating McCallum on her appointment, special minister of state John Graham said: “Rachel McCallum’s legal and public sector experience, understanding of the NSW Electoral Commission and NSW’s electoral laws, and commitment to impartiality make her an ideal person to lead the NSW Electoral Commission.”
He added: “Her background in public service and electoral matters, coupled with her expertise in regulatory oversight should ensure she brings a fair and balanced approach to this critical role.”
Filling the vacancy arising from the retirement of former NSW electoral commissioner John Schmidt in April this year, McCallum will commence her eight-year term on 2 December.
