Internationally-based Australian screen executive Deirdre Brennan has been appointed the new CEO of Screen Australia.
Ms Brennan, who has held senior roles at the ABC, BBC and NBC, is currently COO at Canadian media, animation and brand licensing company WildBrain.
Arts Minister Tony Burke said Ms Brennan would strengthen the telling of uniquely Australian stories in her new position with Screen Australia, which is the government’s primary body for fostering an innovative and commercially sustainable local production industry.
“Australia’s screen industry is so important to how we see ourselves, learn about each other and let the world get to know us,” he said in a statement.
“Screen Australia is integral to that.”
Screen Australia’s Chair Nicholas Moore also welcomed Ms Brennan, saying the appointment came at a pivotal time for the Australian screen industry and would help connect with international audiences in new ways.
Previously, Ms Brennan worked at BBC Worldwide Australia as the Director of Television, General Manager and Director of Content.
“I am excited to return to Australia to lead such an important organisation, focusing on building a sustainable future for the creative industry amidst evolving technologies, competitive pressures and expanding platforms,” she said in a statement.
“Screen Australia’s mission is very clear and I will strive to be a passionate advocate and partner for our creators, storytellers and emerging talent.”
Her former roles include Head of Children’s Television at ABC TV and General Manager of Universal Kids at NBC Universal.
Her appointment begins on January 8, replacing outgoing CEO Graeme Mason.
