LGANT announces new CEO

The Local Government Association of the Northern Territory has appointed Mary Watson as its new chief executive officer.

Watson – who commenced the role last week – has been LGANT’s acting CEO since February.

While congratulating Watson on her appointment, LGANT president Kon Vatskalis highlighted some of her recent accomplishments.

Kon Vatskalis

“In her role as acting CEO this year Mary successfully delivered the April 2024 conference and general meeting, mapped out a plan for the organisation’s advocacy efforts in the leadup to the August 2024 NT Legislative Assembly elections , and employed new team members.”

Prior to joining LGANT – which has been the Territory’s local government peak for more than 30 years – Watson worked within the Department of Chief Minister and Cabinet and the Department of Industry Tourism and Trade.

She has also worked for the Australian Government, Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast council.

Upon accepting her new role, Watson listed some of her initial priorities. “One of my key drivers is to work with the new government to build a collaborative and effective relationship that focuses on local decision making, code of conduct reform, and financial sustainability – among other issues.”
