The Digital Health Agency has appointed a clinical nursing advisor to help increase enagement between the statutory government body and the nursing profession.

Karen Booth

The agency, which has responsibility for Australia’s digital health infrastructure including My Health Record and digital prescriptions, on Monday announced the appointment of experienced nurse Karen Booth as its inaugural Chief Clinical Adviser (Nursing).

Ms Booth, who has a background in primary care, preventative care, clinical governance and leadership, will play a key role in supporting the uptake of digital technology in nursing.

Agency CEO Amanda Cattermole PSM said Ms Booth’s appointment was a significant milestone for the Agency and the digital health sector, and would support greater engagement between the agency and Australia’s nursing workforce.

She said Ms Booth had a long history of advocating for digital health in the nursing profession and has played a pivotal role in the future of the Australian healthcare system as a member of the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce.

“Ms Booth will provide us with valuable insights and guidance on how to better support nurses in the adoption of digital health,” Ms Cattermole said.

Ms Booth said she would ensure that nurses’ perspectives are included and represented in the Agency’s initiatives and programs.

“Nurses play a crucial role in providing safe, high-quality, person-centred care, and I know first-hand that digital health technologies and capabilities can improve their abilities, knowledge and practice,” Ms Booth said.

Ms Booth’s appointment would augment and strengthen the Agency’s clinical leadership alongside the recent appointment of Dr Amandeep Hansra as Chief Clinical Adviser (Medicine), Ms Cattermole said.

She starts work on September 30, and will serve on the agency’s senior executive committee.
