Auditor cracks whip on unresolved recommendations

Victoria’s auditor general made more than 1,500 recommendations for improvement to 100 public sector agencies in the four years to 2022. But how many of them were acted on?

VAGO’s annual status update says the state’s audit office made 1,518 recommendations to government departments and agencies and local councils between July 2018 and June 2022.

In that time, agencies reported that they had accepted 97 per cent of recommendations (1469) and completed 79 per cent cent 1166), taking a median of 12 months to complete.

“Most agencies reported that they accept and are implementing our recommendations,” Auditor General Andrew Greaves concludes.

However, 303 recommendations that had been accepted were yet to be resolved.

“Agencies should complete these recommendations to mitigate the risks we found in their respective engagements,” the report says.

There is no legislative requirement for agencies to accept, complete or report on our recommendations, but VAGO says it’s in the interests of agencies to take action.

The agencies have been asked to explain when they expect to finish the work.

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action had the highest number of unresolved recommendations (30), but it also had the most resolved issues (105).
