UPDATE: In breaking news just now NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed that Mr Turnbull has been dumped from the role. In media statements Mr Turnbull has blamed a media campaign against him.

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will chair the new NSW Net Zero Emissions and Clean Economy Board.  

The Board will be established by regulation to provide strategic and expert advice on program design and funding proposals under the State’s inaugural $1 billion Net Zero Plan Stage 1: 2020-2030.

Energy minister Matt Kean said the board would support industry to develop low emissions technologies and modernise industrial processes.

“The Board will bring cross-sector experts together to ensure we have the right policies and initiatives to give industry the confidence they need to invest, innovate and build a low-carbon future – right here in NSW,” said.

It will also play a key role in delivering low-carbon jobs in the Hunter and Illawarra regions.

NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte will serve as Deputy Chair.

Mr Turnbull said the global move to net zero emissions by 2050 would create huge economic opportunities for Australia.

“I intend to make sure NSW realises them,” he said. The rest of the Board will comprise representatives  from the electricity, powerfuels, transport, manufacturing and primary industries sectors as well as climate science, technology and innovation, public policy and finance.
