NSW motorists appear to have embraced the digital drivers licence (DDL), which has been downloaded by more than one million drivers since it launched in November.
Not surprisingly, the 25-34 age demographic have been the most enthusiastic users, with more than 235,000 downloads.
NSW residents are now able to use their DDL at Australia Post for over-the-counter parcel collections and supermarkets Woolworths and Coles will also accept the DDL.
Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello says he is working with industry to enable the DDL to be used in more day-to-day situations, such as opening a bank account or taking out a loan.
“The ultimate vision is for people to be confident going wallet free, knowing that (the) DDL will be accepted in most situations where a driver’s licence is required for proof of identity,” he said in a statement.
A ‘copy solution’ is being built to provide an alternative in situations where NSW residents are required to take a photocopy of a drivers licence and enable the DDL to be accepted in more places in 2020.
The technology has been embraced by clubs, pubs and the police, Mr Dominello said, with the DDL being used more than four million times.
The DDL is hosted on the new Service NSW app and locks with a PIN. The government says it provides more security and protection against identity fraud than the plastic drivers licence. It can also be accessed offline.
