Following the NSW Government’s call for action on allegations against Hills Shire Council Mayor Greg Burnett; his subsequent resignation will not affect regular council business.
As a result of allegations against Mr Burnett of embezzlement as reported by a number of media sources, Premier Barry O’Farrell urged action to be taken against him.
A NSW Government spokesperson confirmed to Government News that Mr O'Farrell said he "is concerned at the allegations” and has “raised the issue with the state director and urged action be taken”.
A Hills Shire Council spokesperson confirmed Mr Burnett has resigned from his role as mayor and has indicated that he will not stand in the upcoming local government elections.
“Council’s services and facilities will continue to operate as usual and the matter has been passed onto the appropriate authorities,” the spokesperson said.
According to the spokesperson, the allegations towards Mr Burnett do not relate to council business.
