Cirque du Soleil leaps on Adelaide plan

Revenue will be generated for Adelaide City Council following an endorsement of an agreement between the council and Canadian entertainment company, Cirque du Soleil.

The council’s ‘City Culture & Community Services Committee’ voted in support of a 10 year agreement with the Montreal-based company.

According to the council, this will enable the company to visit Adelaide on a recurring basis.

If the proposal is endorsed, Cirque du Soleil will assist in developing the infrastructure and facilities in Tambawodli (Park 24).

This will include the costs of a hard surface to remain in the park for the life of the agreement.

Full terms and conditions of the 10 year agreement will be negotiated with Cirque du Soleil before commencement of an installation plan for the permanent surface, if endorsed by council.

According to the council, the move is in line with its current plans to develop the park into a major multi-purpose event space, which is supported by the Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy.

Councillor Houssam Abiad said the show is expected to bring approximately $6.6 million in direct income through local production, food and beverage, accommodation, retail and transportation, as well as economic development.

Councillor Michael Henningsen said the agreement was an issue of balancing the need for events and protecting the park lands.

“The containment of these kinds of activities under this 10 year plan will ensure Adelaide continues to attract major events such as Cirque du Soleil as well as other circuses and festivals, while minimising the impact on our parks,” Mr Henningsen said.

Mr Henningsen said the agreement is a “win-win for the city”, where it is proposed that all money raised from the event space will be invested back into improving the park lands.
