LGA SA gets online apps

International companies have expressed interest in working with the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGA SA) to create an online information application.

The application would be for mobile phones and computers, attracting 16 IT design and development companies from Australia and overseas.

The application, dubbed ‘My Local’, is meant to identify facilities, including schools, parks and other local community information and their proximity to a local address.

According to the LGA, expressions of interest for the application development are currently being evaluated, including from Mumbai and London, which are expected to be evaluated by the end of the current financial year.

Seven local councils formed a reference group with the LGA’s IT department to shape the direction of My Local to provide readily accessible community information, according to the LGA.

These councils included Adelaide, Campbelltown, Charles Sturt, Marion, Mitcham, Playford and Salisbury.

LGA President, Kym McHugh said the application would provide a range of information services to South Australian residents, visitors and investors relevant to local council areas.

"We are very excited about the level of interest we have received for the actual on-line delivery of this process, particularly the international attention," Mayor McHugh said.

Mr McHugh said the application would give up to the minute information about land development zones, council services including waste collection, access to facilities such as libraries and leisure opportunities, local parks and gardens and relevant local information from other governments.

According to Mr McHugh, the application will inform what planning zone the land is in and whether it sits in a bushfire or flood plain zone if one is looking for a location.

He said it will include information about state and federal electorates, child care facilities and schools, beaches, parks, rubbish collection days.

Mr McHugh said it will also include councillor information and recycling centres, “in short just about everything you would need or want to know about a particular area on your mobile”.
