Primary school students in Western Australia have been speaking to Hollywood filmmaker, James Cameron via social media.

The Perth-based Roseworth Primary School in Girrawheen is one of two in the world chosen to speak to Mr Cameron on board his ship almost 6000 kilometres away using social media program, Skype.

The communication follows Mr Cameron’s recent one-man deep sea exploration 11 kilometres to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Western Pacific.

Students will also discuss the research footage with experts and follow future expeditions following their own creation of blogs, wikis, e-portfolios and quizzes related to Mr Cameron’s deep sea exploration.

Telecommunications company, Telstra established a working relationship with the school to allow the project to go ahead.

Minister for Education, Elizabeth Constable said the technology gives students access to experts from all over the world.

Roseworth Primary School principal, Geoff Metcalf said classrooms have been fitted with technology for high definition video recording, Skype video capture and webcam.

“Students can work individually on footage captured in the deep sea environment,” Mr Metcalf said.

According to Mr Metcalf, the school will also link up with Los Angeles school MUSE Elementary founded by Mr Cameron’s wife, Suzy Amis.

“Mr Cameron and his wife are keen to see a partnership between the two schools and have offered their support to develop sharing opportunities using information technology,” Mr Metcalf said.
