QLD road signs smarten up

Weather sensitive speed and warning signs have been installed along Kuranda Range Road, near Cairns.

The Queensland Government’s $66 million Safer Roads Sooner Program funded the electronic ‘Vehicle Activated Signs’.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace and Member for Barron River, Steve Wettenhall said the signs have weather sensors that automatically adjust speeds according to weather conditions.

Mr Wettenhall said the signs monitor the speed of approaching vehicles and display messages to drivers to ‘slow down’ at tight bends.

Queensland is spending another $1.5 million on top of the nearly $3 million of works last year, according to Mr Wettenhall.

“I’ve always pushed for improvements to the Kuranda Range Road because 8000 drivers use the steep and winding road every day and 800 of those vehicles are trucks,” Mr Wettenhall said.

About $2.9 million of works were completed on the range road in the 2010-11 financial year including $1.8 million for three priority curve widening works.

Another $290000 was spent on road surface treatments to improve skid resistance, and $500000 was used to upgrade the road’s surface delineation and install additional guardrails.
