Melbourne students get a lesson on the environment

The City of Melbourne has planned a special forum and workshop for teens interested in environmental issues.
The event will be held at the Melbourne Town Hall on September 23, during the September school holidays. The agenda was developed by a working group of young people from a range of Melbourne schools and suburbs.
Future Melbourne (Eco-city) committee chair, Cathy Oake said the eco city youth forum was about young people learning about sustainability initiatives.
The morning session will focus on brainstorming environmental issues and then developing project/action areas for use by the City of Melbourne.
During the afternoon session teens will be able to participate in fun activities. They will visit Signal to take part in their street art and circuit bending (making musical instruments from old circuits/electronics) activities.
Cr Oake said the aim of the program was to see young people become the next generation of leaders in sustainability.
“We will take the project ideas developed at the forum and explore which ones could be implemented now. We will also develop project plans for any long term strategies that could bid for Council funding at a later date.”
Cr Oake said the community was full of great information on how to reduce our eco footprint so the forums are a great place to share this knowledge.
The idea of a youth-themed forum came from Cr Oke's background in working with young people on local environment projects.
Across Australia she has worked with teens, state and local governments on common environmental projects.
