APS receives whole-of-government ICT workforce plan

A whole-of-government strategic ICT workforce plan and ICT career structure has been unveiled by the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC).

The APSC said the purpose of the whole-of-government ICT strategic workforce plan was to assist APS agencies in identifying the ICT capacity and capabilities and develop a strategic APS-wide understanding of the interconnection between demography, labour markets, skills shortage, workforce planning, employment branding, attraction and retention strategies for the APS ICT workforce.

Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner, said the Australian Public Service (APS) now had appropriate strategies in place to improve the recruitment, retention and engagement of ICT personnel, which was one of the recommendations of the Gershon review.

“Our aim is to have a workforce that can meet the Federal Government’s future ICT needs,” Mr Tanner said.

“That workforce needs to be sufficiently skilled and mobile to apply the new technologies that will deliver improved services to Australians.

“This workforce plan and career structure goes a long way to achieving that.”
