WA Govt invests in regional airport upgrades

Local governments and airport operators in regional Western Australia can now apply for their share of more than $7 million State Government funding to improve airport infrastructure.

Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said the Regional Airports Development Scheme funding would allow for essential upgrades in isolated communities.

“For many isolated communities air-link is an essential connection to the outside world,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I would urge members of the regional communities to approach their local authorities if they have a proposal to improve their local facilities.

Submissions are to be assessed on a number of criteria, including type of project, benefit to the community, integration with airport master plans and environmental management.

“There is a lower limit for grants for $10,000, but no upper limit,” Mr O’Brien said.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said successful applicants can use the funds for airside projects, including runway lighting, airstrip upgrades and animal exclusion fencing.

“The grants may also be put towards eligible landside improvement projects such as developing terminal buildings, Royal Flying Doctor patient transfer facilities and installing security equipment.”
