Amalgamated councils lodge compo claims

Councils in Queensland have submitted their compensation claims to cover the costs of amalgamations.

More than 20 councils lodged claims for millions of dollars in State Government assistance before Tuesday’s deadline.

The most expensive claim is from Sunshine Coast Regional Council, which has applied for $12 million in compensation.

The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) has called on the Bligh Government to quickly respond to the needs of amalgamated councils seeking financial assistance.

“The councils have all lodged claims which are limited and appropriate,” LGAQ president Cr Paul Bell said.

“We urge the State Government to be genuine in its approach to considering the claims.”

A number of councils decided against lodging a claim, including Moreton Bay Regional Council, Cassowary Coast Regional Council and Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Compensation claims include:

  • Sunshine Coast Regional Council – $12 million
  • Rockhampton Regional Council – $8 million
  • Goondiwindi Regional Council – $7 million
  • Tablelands Regional Council – $6 million
  • Logan City Council – $5 million
  • Dalby Regional Council – $5 million
  • Whitsunday Regional Council – $4.9 million
