The NSW government has announced James Sherrard as the state’s new building commissioner.

With more than 30 years’ experience in construction – including in the areas of strategy, commercial and infrastructure – Sherrard was previously head of commercial, performance and strategy at Transport NSW.

While there, Sherrard led a team responsible for contract frameworks, the acquisition of property for major infrastructure projects, and procurement.

As project manager working on sporting infrastructure projects, Sherrard was involved in both the Sydney and London Olympics. With formal qualifications in building, business and law, Sherrard has also worked as a consultant on various urban renewal projects.

“With his depth and breadth of experience across the public and private sectors and globally, Mr Sherrard is well placed to take the Building Commission to the next level in its development,” minister for building Anoulack Chanthivong said.

Last year, saw the launch of the Building Commission NSW – a standalone regulator with a 400-or so team. “It is exciting to embark on a new era with James at the helm,” Chanthivong said.

Sherrard – who commences the role on 2 December – replaces David Chandler who retired in August. Matt Press, who became acting building commissioner while the recruitment process was complete, will continue in the post until Sherrard’s arrival.
