Senior Queensland public servant Graham Fraine will lead a new agency responsible for co-ordinating delivery of the Brisbane Olympics.
Mr Fraine, Director-General of the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water, has been appointed CEO of the Brisbane 2032 Coordination Office.
The office will coordinate delivery of the Olympic and Paralympic Games with Brisbane City, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast councils and the SEQ Council of Mayors, as well as other government and Olympic partners.
IOC Vice President John Coates has welcomed the formation of the office, saying the model made sense and would help streamline processes.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the new body would cut red tape and ensure input from all Games partners.
“This body represents nine months of discussion with all of our Games partners on the best and most efficient way of delivering the best Olympic and Paralympic Games ever,” she said.
The office was recommended in a report by Deloitte as means of saving costs and avoiding bureaucratic double-ups.
“We believe the Brisbane Coordination Office, which is to be overseen by all Brisbane 2032 partners, will provide an effective and cooperative coordination mechanism to get this critical work done,” Deloitte said on Tuesday.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the new office would ensure Councils’s engagement and input.
“Having seen the proposed governance model, I am confident that there is an appropriate level of engagement and opportunities for input from the Sunshine Coast,” he said.
The coordination office will oversee a range of areas including infrastructure, First Nations, environment, legacy, and security.
The Olympic and Paralympic Games Infrastructure Office will design and deliver the key venues, villages, and transport infrastructure, and a Leader’s Forum including federal, state and council representatives will work with the Brisbane 2032Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee (OCOG).
Iwould love to see a special Lotto established to fund a new Stadium that would leave a lasting Legacy for decades to come for Brisbane. The profits over the years ahead would certainly cover the cost of a great venue that would be the pride of Brisbane. We really need a wonderful complex to compare with other s around the world. Ifeel sure Queenslanders and a great many Australians would support this cause.
